Ryhill and the Doomsday Book
Ryhill featured in the Doomsday Book.
At Christmas 1085, William the Conqueror ordered his officials to go into every part of England and hold courts of the "Hundreds" (or Wapentakes) to find out how much land there was in every manor, who owned it, and how much it was worth.
All the answers were copied into the "Doomsday Book" and Rihella (Ryhill) is featured on Page 317.
The two volumes were kept in an iron chest (The Doomsday Chest) and they were traditionally kept at Westminster but are now in the Museum of Public Records, London.
Below is a copy of the entry for Rihella (Ryhill)
